Electric fencing was originally introduced as a method of managing livestock and vegetation. It was used to protect domestic animals and crops from harm that may be caused by external factors or themselves. With time, however, electric fences began to be installed at residential perimeters as a means of keeping intruders at bay. The trend grew and continues to grow already extending to commercial use and incurring regulations from governments. Presently the highest shock allowed to be delivered by a residential electric fence is 10,000 volts, enough to discourage any intruders but not enough to cause any serious or lasting damage.
Residential electric fences are relatively easy to install as they can simply be mounted on already existing walls or directly in front of fences to provide a more formidable barrier to intruders. All properly installed electric fences must have bright warning signs which serve as an initial deterrent to would-be intruders. The fences should also be installed with energizers that provide pulses of electricity instead of a steady stream that can prove to be lethal.
Energizers are also installed with the electric fences and they are usually tamper-proof which means that they sound an alarm if the system is interfered with or manipulated in any way. Apart from giving the inhabitants of the residence it surrounds peace of mind and a feeling of security, a properly constructed electric fence will warn the inhabitants of intruders and give them time to escape or defend themselves. When there is a power outage, the backup battery installed with the fence kicks in for several hours keeping the area safe still. For those interested in renewable energy, solar powered electric fences have been invented so we can protect the earth an our properties at the same time.Electric fencing is still being used in farms but with many advancements that enable them to keep wild animals away from crops and livestock. The fences are relatively cheap to install and with periodical maintenance checks will last a very long time. Any capital invested in electric fencing is, unless the work is not done right, capital well spent. The pros of procuring an electrified perimeter far outweigh its cons of which only one comes to mind, the injury of particularly adamant intruders, which is also highly unlikely as the shock delivered will trigger an immediate reflex response to let go of the fence.
USEFULNESS OF ELECTRIC FENCE
- Low cost.
An electric fence can perform the same task as a conventional fence using much less material. Depending on the length of the fence where the cost of the energizer may be spread over, this type of fencing generally proves to be cheaper than standard fencing.
- Deterrent to Thieves
An electric fence serves as a deterrent to would be burglars. The fence serves as a physical and active perimeter barrier to burglars and the system sounds an alarm when the fence is tampered with, alerting those within the perimeter.
Electric fences are not subjected to the same physical pressure from animals, and can therefore be expected to have a greatly extended service life.
- Universal application
Experience world wide has shown that electric fencing will contain all types of animals. This includes Elephants, bears, walrus, hippo and even snails. Educated stock develop greater respect for electric fencing than for any other type of fence.
Electric fences can be easily integrated into already existing fencing structures with little to no modifications required.
- Low maintenance
Once an electric fence is properly installed, it requires little maintenance. Periodic checks of the fence are enough to detect any issues that would be easy and cost efficient to fix.
- Protects livestock and crops
The electric shock from your electric fence protects your livestock and crops from harm by external factors, saving a lot in livestock loss or crop damage.
